Temperament:

Haiku is the daughter of Sorley and Friday. She is a brown Standard Poodle and one of the easiest Standards I have ever lived with. She is quiet and easygoing, gets along with everyone, and is excellent with children. She will alert bark when a stranger arrives, but otherwise she is a very quiet dog.

Of all our Standards, Haiku is easily the laziest. I often describe her as almost catlike - she is happy to relax near her family and does not need to be constantly entertained. At the same time, when I ask her to work, she becomes attentive, responsive, and very connected to me.

Haiku became especially important to me in 2020, when I began training her for service work because I was struggling with extreme social anxiety. We did not progress as far as public-access work, but I firmly believe she was capable of it. She showed the intelligence, focus, intuition, and desire to work with me that I would hope to find in a service prospect.

She learns naturally and is highly biddable without being frantic or constantly demanding a job. Haiku has a wonderful ability to engage when something is asked of her and then settle comfortably back into everyday family life.

Training and Accomplishments

During Haiku’s only weekend of showing, she earned a qualifying leg toward her Rally title and made progress toward her conformation championship. Although I did not continue campaigning her, she handled the unfamiliar environment well and showed both her willingness to work and her lovely breed type.

To me, Haiku represents so much of what I want in a family Standard Poodle. She is intelligent, intuitive, athletic enough to do more than we have asked of her, excellent with children, and exceptionally easy to live with. She is a very special dog to me, and I hope to preserve her easy nature, trainability, connection with people, and lovely breed type in her puppies.
